WITH THE GERMAN ARMIES IN THE WEST

BY SVEN HEDIN AUTHORISED TRANSLATION FROM THE SWEDISH BY H. G. DE WALTERSTORFF WITH 119 ILLUSTRATIONS AND 4 MAPS LONDON : JOHN LANE, THE BODLEY HEAD NEW YORK : JOHN LANE COMPANY MCMXV SECOND EDITION WILLIAM BRENDON AND SON, LTD., PRINTERS, PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND For the hospitality, the confidence and the comradeship which have been shown to me in the German armies at the Western Front, I tender my most heartfelt thanks. SVEN HEDIN Stockholm 27th January, 1915

Preface to the electronic edition

Sven Hedin visited the German armies on the western front in the autumn of 1914, and recounted his impressions in the Swedish book Från fronten i väster (1915). This English translation was published the same year. Sweden was neutral during the war, but Sven Hedin was not. He is full of admiration for the apparently victorious German forces. The English publisher felt a need to add a note at the beginning of the book.

The book was digitized in June 2008 at the University of California libraries by the Internet Archive, from where the scanned images and OCR text in January 2024 were copied to Project Runeberg. The page images were dark and we made them brighter (adjusted white balance).

This volume was scanned elsewhere and made available by the Internet Archive, from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg. We very much appreciate that they have made this possible and want to encourage other digital library projects to follow their example. Read more about Project Runeberg's image sources.
