Preface to the electronic edition

"Flora Danica" is a title first given to this work by Simon Paulli in 1648. A century later, it was reused for the larger work (published in 51 fascicles, 1761–1883) as described in Wikipedia. Both works were presented online in 1998 as part of early online initiatives by Kulturnet Danmark and Danmarks Natur- og Lægevidenskabelige Bibliotek, but only very few pages were digitized and they can now only be found as archived web pages.

In August 2009, this 1500 page volume from 1648 was digitized by the National library of Norway, from where the scanned images in March 2023 were copied to Project Runeberg. We have added OCR text produced using Tesseract 5.1 (dan_frak, lat).

This book contains textual descriptions, without printed pagination (here paginated in sequence, as digitized), and illustration plates, with printed pagination from 1 to 395. The plants are divided into four parts (Den første Part, etc.), depending of which season of the year they blossom or grow (winter, spring, summer, fall), containing 8, 136, 229, and 11 plants each, for a total of 384 plants.

This book was compiled a century before Linnæus systematized plants and standardized their scientific / Latin names. For example, the dandelion (part 3, plant 53), which in Danish is known as løvetand or mælkebøtte, is here called Dens leonis (tooth of lion) in Latin, not Taraxacum.

This volume was scanned by the Norwegian National Library, from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
