EARLY DAYS ON THE MINNESOTA
PRAIRIES

Early Days

Although an occasional trapper visited southwestern
Minnesota as early as the early forties, yet the Indian
held undisputed possession until the advance guards of
civilization appeared in the sixties. To this advance
the red man entered a vigorous protest which found
its expression in the uprising and cruel massacres of
1862. The Indians were finally captured and
thirty-eight of them were tried and hung at Mankato and
the remnant brought to Davenport, Iowa, where, as a
soldier in the Civil War, I stood guard over them many
an hour. In their confinement many died and burials
were the order of the day.

Immediately after the war, the Minnesota Valley
railroad pushed further west until in 1871 under the
name of the St. Paul and Pacific railroad it was graded
as far as Worthington. Settlers followed in its wake
and the lonely frontier began to take on life.

Meager Transportation Facilities

My first visit to the Western frontier of Minnesota
was made in March, 1872. I started out afoot from
Brownsville, this state, over the wooded hill country
