however, a considerable mass of timber went past Munkfors and had afterwards to be
sold. The Company found itself, therefore, obliged to build another saw mill, and
selected for this purpose the place where the river Klarälven flows into lake Vänern,
at which place the floating timber easily could be recovered and manufactured. For this
purpose there was purchased the estate of Lunden, lying close to lake Värnern, on the
Skoghall branch of the Klarälven, and their was built the Skoghall saw mills. At that
time, both Munkfors, and, more especially, Skoghall, were very up-to-date saw mills but
the development of milling technics soon made them old fashioned and expensive to run.
The manufacture of Wood Pulp was begun by the Uddeholm Company as early
as 1888, the Stjernsfors Sulphate Factory being built that year for the production of
3,000—4,000 tons of sulphate cellulose. It is characteristic of the time that the
Company did not venture to build this factory itself but formed another Company
specially for the purpose — Stjerns Aktiebolag — in which concern, however,
Uddeholm held the majority of the shares. Almost one half of the shares were offered
to the public, the Uddeholm Company reserving the right, however, of redeeming
these shares within a certain time and on certain conditions laid down in advance.
