the business of the old firms, and many a long-established ironworks has gradualty
been transformed into a purely forest-industries enterprise. In other instances, again,
the manufacture of iron has been continued and developed, supported by the charcoal
obtained from the forests, but, at the same time, in order to fully utilize the timber
estates, a wood goods and cellulose industry has become part of the business. To this
latter class of Swedish Ironworks belongs
UDDEHOLMS AKTIEBOLAG
which, aided by the timber obtained from the Company’s immense forest areas, carries
on, not only the production of iron and steel of the very highest quality, but also an
important wood goods and wood pulp industry.
HISTORY.
The Uddeholm Company is one of the oldest industrial enterprises in Sweden,
its history dating back to the middle of the 17th century. The first step to the
establishment of the Uddeholm Works was taken in 1668, when a mining master — Johan
Karlstrom — at the initiative of the Governor of Varmland, applied for a license to
erect an ironworks at Uddeholm. The license was obtained in 1669, after considerable
difficulty, and the Works were built and, at first, developed very rapidly, Karlstrom
