the 2nd August, pain in the left gluteal region; on the 28th
August, conjunctivitis (left eye) ; 29th August, ciliary injection;
31st August, oedema palpebrarum; 1st September, iritis witli
bleeding into the anterior chamber and dimness of the cornea
5th September, intra-ocular pressure decreased ; 8th September,
pain in left leg; 20th September, in left ankle ; 5th October,
pain in the neck.
The patient says that when the pain in the eyes increases, it
also gets worse in the leg ; 15th October, the ciliary injection
decreased; 22nd October, the glands in the neck and groin
were swollen, and there were white patches on the tonsils.
For these, mercurial ointment and iodide of potash were
prescribed.
On December 6 th the patient complained of pains in the left
hip-joint, and especially in the middle, between the trochanter
major and the tuber ischii ; muscular weakness which caused
waddling towards left side when walking. Lying on the
right side, he could not lift the left leg in the least without
help.
On the left eye there was imniobility of the pupil ; dimness
of the lens ; the fingers could scarcely be counted at a distance
of 2 metres ; small ciliary injection on the lateral edge of the
cornea.
On the right eye the papilla and surrounding parts were red,
and could hardly be distinguished from each other. No pains
sight good.
The treatment was started on the 6th December.
Progress. —Dec. 10 th. No pain, only weakness in the leg,
which makes the walk difiicult. Ciliary injection gone.
Eec. lUh. Walks straighter,
Dec. 1 1th. Walks well, lf>oks much better, can make nearly
as much resistance with the affected leg as with the sound one.
Dec. 18th. Discharged as cured from the sciatica.
Treatment.—The patient lay in the prone position. Transverse
frictions were for some minutes made over the great sciatic
