Shaking of the Pharynx.
There are three different manipulations for the pharynx, and
these have already been described by me.*
1st. The fingers of one hand are placed, with the palmar
surface upwards, as far back as possible, two on each side of the
root of the tongue. Then a quick, shaking movement is made
in an upward and slightly forward direction (fig. 20).

If, while giving this shaking, we move our fingers forwards, it
is evident that the tongue, submaxillary and sublingual glands,
will be more especially affected.
2nd, The root of the tongue is grasped between the thumb
and the fingers, and shaken in a lateral direction (fig. 21).
3rd. The tips of the fingers are placed behind the ascending
ramus of the lower jaw (figs. 22 and 23).
Here the movement has the direction inwards, forwards, and
downwards. One side may be treated after the other, or both
