PREFACE.



The following pages are intended to serve as a guide to the
student, and to set more clearly before the minds of readers the
curative uses to which Ling’s System of Manual Treatment may
be applied. They mainly consist of sixteen demonstrations,
which were given by me at Pola during the winter of 1888—89.
These lectures were delivered at the request of the surgeons
of the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy, and also of
the surgeons of the land forces stationed at Pola. Numerous
illustrations have been added, in order to render more clear the
directions in the text; and it is hoped that the work may prove
not only of interest, but of practical utility, in the study of this
form of medical treatment.

Last autumn the Naval Department of the Ministry of War
of the Austro-Hungarian Government did me the honour to print
my description of the various movements, with the annexed
illustrations, in the Sanitary Report of the Imperial and Royal
Austro-Hungarian Navy for the year 1888. I may here take
the opportunity of expressing my sincere thanks to Doct. Med.
Eugen Gruber, K.u.K. Linienschiffsarzt, for undertaking the
onerous task of translating my English into German, and to
Doct. Med. Maximilian Brillant, K.u.K. Fregattenarzt, for the
trouble he had in correcting the proof-sheets. I must also
express my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness which I
received on every occasion from the medical officers of the
