SURAHAMMARS BRUKS AKTIEBOLAG

Wheel turning shop.

sheets of different kinds, roof sheets,
&c. The electrical sheets,
dynamo-and high-silicon transformer sheets
are of a very high grade as to their
electrical properties.

A 750-mm (30") 3-high blooming
and sheet-bar mill of modern design
is being erected.

ROLLED STEEL. The rolling mill
for rolled steel includes heavy,
medium and merchant mills and also
an universal rolling mill. The chief
product is spoke-iron for the
wheel-manufacture. Mention may also be made here of the Works renowned speciality of
rolled compound steel for cutting tools for wood-working machinery.

TYRES. The new up-to-date tyre rolling mill of the works, turns out tyres of a
very high standard. Its capacity is so great that, by the day shifts alone, it can
produce tyres not only for the Company’s own manufacture of wheels, but also those
required for the Swedish State and Private Railways, and supplies for export besides.

THE TESTING DEPARTMENT. In order to keep the development of the many
manufactures at the very highest pitch, the Works have organized a perfectly modern
testing department, where chemical as well as metallographic investigations are made.
Besides this, there is also on the ground floor of the office building a modern
establishment for determining the mechanical properties of the products.

THE SVANÅ WORKS.

These Works are situated 2 kilometres (iy4 miles) from S vana Station on the
Stockholm-Vesterås Bergslagernas Railways.

The works are probably of rather ancient origin. It is not known when they
were founded, but it is known that they were running as early as 1634. The
works were of some importance in the middle of the seventeenth century, having
already than 4 hammers and 8 forges, some of which, however, were situated at
Fors, in the immediate neighbourhood.

The Works belonged to different families of the Swedish nobility, such as the
Counts Brahe, de la Gardie, Stenbock and Posse until 1848, when they were
transferred to a Company - S vana Bruks Bolag - which, in 1905, was amalgamated
with the Surahammar Company.
