this population with the necessaries of life at reasonable prices the Company has
become the owner of a considerable area of agricultural land amounting to some 1,150
hectares (2,800 acres), besides a dairy and flour-mills. The area of the timberland
amounts to about 15,000 hectares (37,500 acres), which supplies the Works with a
considerable proportion of the large amount of the required charcoal.
During the course of time, the Company has spent considerable sums in the erection
of attractive and comfortable dwellings for its staff and workmen. Each married
member of the staff has a house to himself. If a workman wishes to have a house of his own,
the Company advances him a part of the necessary capital as a loan to be repaid by
yearly instalments.
Great attention has also been paid by the Company to the sanitary conditions of
their estates, by the erection of a thoroughly and efficiently equipped hospital with a
section for operations, and also by laying down both water- and sewage mains throughout
the district.

We give here some figures showing the weight in tons of the finished- and
half-finished goods sent from the Company’s Works every year.
