SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG 83

years, steel bands have come more and more into use instead of leather or rubber belts
for power transmission.

The softer product is largely employed on for the manufacture of deep-pressed
articles and machine parts which are made on a large scale, such as, skimming machine
(separator) parts, telephone parts, ball cages in ball bearings, &c., and also for flexible
tubes, the incapsuling of electric wires, etc. Cold rolled wire is employed, it may be
specially mentioned, for grooved umbrella wire (the so-called "paragon" umbrella wire) of
which Sandviken is still the largest manufacturer in the world. In addition, there is
produced spring steel for clocks, grammophones and corsets.

Sandviken saws have attracted much attention on account of their good quality,
and find a very good market.

Hound cold drawn wire is made in large quantities, both of alloyed and carbon steel.
It is used in the first place for the manufacture of spiral springs, gong springs, piano
springs, &c. In addition round steel is employed for the manufacture of screws and bolts,
and for balls for ball bearings. Special mention may be made of the Company’s
manufacture of silver-steel in straightened rods. This product is characterized by a hard,
polished surface and extremely exact dimensions, and is chiefly employed for the finer
kinds of drilling tools, as shafts for small machines, for instruments, &c.

Of springs there are manufactured, among other things, grammaphone springs, watch
springs, organ springs, regulating springs for motors, &c., and various shape springs.

For the purpose of checking and testing the goods manufactured, there is an up to
date testing department, with a chemical laboratory, laboratory for mechanical testing,
electric laboratory furnaces, and complete apparatus for microscopic examinations.

Under normal conditions, about 75 % of the total manufactures of the Company
are exported.

We have now endeavoured to give the reader some idea of the Sandviken Iron
Works’ productions, and, as may be seen, they are of a very varied description, represent
in general a manufacture of such high quality, that, in this respect, Sandviken is not
surpassed by any Swedish iron works, and that is saying not a little in such an ancient
home of ironproduction as Sweden.

AND FORESTS.

The motive power required by the Sandviken Iron Works is obtained from the Näs
and Älfkarleby Power-stations in the River Dalälfven.

In 1908, the Company bought the waterfall called Lanforsen, situated about 9 miles
from the mouth of the Dalälfven; this is now being mounted and, after the regulation of
