UDDEHOLMS AKTIEBOLAG-

staple-town of Gothenburg, who took advantage of their position in a somewhat
hard-handed manner, not unusual in those times. This, together with the extremely
inconvenient communications, occasioned the Works great difficulties, in spite of the
period of general prosperity which the Swedish mining concerns enjoyed during the
vigorous reign of Charles XI. The business was continued without interruption,
however, as long as Karlström and his widow lived, until 1714, notwithstanding the great
wars, famine and plague during the last years of Charles XII’s reign.

Somewhat later, in 1720, the Works were taken over by Bengt Gustaf Geijer, a
mine-owner, first on lease and later on, after purchase. Under his intelligent and

energetic
management the Works
flourished in such
a manner that this
man can well be
said to be the
real founder of the
present Uddeholm
Works. New
furnaces and
bar-iron hammers were
erected, thus
greatly multiplying the
production of iron.
Mines were
acquired and large
estates added to
the original ones.
By cultivating the soil in practically deserted forest districts, well-managed farms were formed; this has been of inestimable value for the maintenance and preservation of the workmen, in times when the hindrances to the communications would otherwise have placed great, not to say unsurmountable, obstacles in the way of doing this.

To the estates were attached extensive wooded domains and waterfalls, which, at
a later date, formed the Company’s mainstay during the trying times for the iron
industry, and which rendered possible the rapid development of the Works that has
been visible of late years.

As a result of Geijer’s directions in his will, the Uddeholm Works afterwards
became a kind of entailed estate in the Geijer family for a long succession of years.
