this first part of the campaign—exclusive of the
4,000 or more they lost at Nanshan. And, last
but not least, he had given his officers and
soldiers a course in practical warfare, and taught
them to understand the fighting methods of the
enemy, which knowledge proved of the greatest
value when the final struggle began.
