1989. What do you mean by saying „Sup
posing“, have you not said here that you knew
that the term that they had was between seven
and eight years, and if so, why did you say
„Supposing“, is it the fact? — Because a large
part of the property concerned in i’.ose leases, al
thovgh the leases come to an end, still remains
the property of the Telegraph Companies.
1990. Do you mean to tell me that on the
London and North Western Railway, at the ex
piration of those terms, the Telegraph Company
have any interest or value ia those lines? — 1
mean to say fat they would have, if f e Railway
Company desired it, to remove their property.
1991. That, I suppose, is the case of most
tenants who have a lease of seven or eight years;
and I ask you, upon what basis have you given
20 years’ purchase for an eight years’ lease? —
Upon the conviction that we could get as good
terms from the Railway Companies as they could.
1992. Are you going to pay them anything
at the expiration of that time for putting up
poles and wires along the North Western Rail
way? — That is what we are going to arbitra
tion about.
1993. Will you tell me, when the terms
altogether have expired, what right whatever,
after the expiration of eight years, the Post Of
fice will have, without payment, to put up a single
post, or a single wire, along the whole system
of the North Western Railway? — lt is a que
stion between the North Western Company and
us; under present drcumstances, ive shall not have
to do so, but we should have to go io the London
and North Western Railway Company 1ulen the
time carne, and make terms with them.
1994. Then, at the time that you made
this bargain with the Electric Telegraph Com
pany, you were buying simply rights which were

pagtninger angaa, fremdeles forhliver Telegraf
kompagniernes Eiendom. omendskjønt Forpagtnin
rerne udløbe.
1990. Er det Deres Mening at sige mig,
at paa London og North-Western Jernbane ved
Ddløbet af disse Terminer Telegrafkompagniet
har nogen Interesse eller Værdi i disse Linier?
— Jeg mener at sige, at det vikle have at skaffe
bort sin Eiendom, dersom Jernbanekompagniel øn
skede det.
1991. Det, antager jeg, er Tilfældet med
de fleste Forpagtere, som have en Kontrakt paa
syv eller otte Aar, og jeg spørger Dem, paa hvil
ket Grundlag har De givet 20 Aars Kjøb for en
otte Aars Forpagtning? — Paa Overbevisningen
om, at vi kunde faa ligesaa gode Betingelser af
Jernbanekompagnierne, som de kunde.
1992. Skal De betale dem Noget ved Udlø
bet af denne Tid for at opstille Pæle og Traacft
langsmed North-Western Jernbane? — Det er,
hvad vi skulle have Voldgiftskjendelse om.
1993. Vil De sige mig, naar Terminerne
allosammen ere udløbne, hvilken Ret somhelst
vil, efter Udløbet af otte Aar, Postvæsenet have
til, uden Betaling, at opstille en eneste Pæl eller
en eneste Traad langsmed North-Western Jern
banens hele System? — Det er et Spørgsmaal
imellem North- Western Co. og os ; under nærvce
rende Omstændigheder skulle vi ikl e kunne gjøre
det; men naar Tiden kom, maatte vi gaa til Lon
don and North- Western Jernbanekompagni og træffe
Overenskomst med det.
1994. Dengang altsaa, da De gjorde denne
Handel med Electric Telegraph Co., kjøbte De
simpelthen Rettigheder, som absolut vilde udløbe
