and a new family in Sweden at the very moment
when I was most in need of it. . .

The lectures which Sonia had delivered at
the University that winter—in German—had
been of an entirely private nature, but they had
been so highly appreciated that it became
possible to Mittag Leffler privately to collect
the means necessary to secure her appointment
to the professorship for five years. A number
of private persons undertook to contribute
2000 kroner a year (about £111), the University
added a similar sum, so that a salary of £222
was offered to Sonia.

Her pecuniary situation no longer allowed
her to do the work for nothing, as she had been
liberal enough to offer at first. But it was not
the financial question which caused difficulties.

There was opposition to overcome which
arose from many sides against the admission of
women to the post of professors in the
University. The case was unprecedented, as no
other University in the world had granted this
privilege as yet. At the end of the five years,
however, Mittag Leffler succeeded in his efforts:
Sonia was nominated for life. (Only a year
later death put a sudden end to her career).
