Mohammedans; they and these semi-pagan tribes, including also the
Votyaks and Tchuvashi, their neighbours, are on a very high
moral level, being industrious, sober, and honest.
I could not sleep at all the first night. The smell, the
vermin, and the presence of diseased mushiks were too much
