Schellenberg’s Story
military-political situation produced by the Allied landing
in Italy seemed to have made such an attack
necessary. I opposed these plans tooth and nail, partly
by attempting to make contact with certain
friends of mine in Switzerland. The idea was
finally abandoned, mainly because of economic
considerations. But Switzerland came very near to
sharing the fate of Denmark and Norway and all
the other occupied countries. The whole episode
was very typical of the foreign policy of the
Third Reich.
This was only one of the occasions on which I
attempted actively to oppose the official policy.
After I had become head of the Political
Department of the German Intelligence Service and, in
1944, head of the whole organization, the defects
of the regime became evident to me. The upper
stratum was corrupt through and through. In my
opinion the one exception was the head of the
SS, Himmler. As the conviction grew in me that
the policy directed by Hitler and Ribbentrop
was bound to have catastrophic results, it became
clear to me that it was a matter of life and death
