at first, in the late autumn of 1944, to the Western
front, and presently to the Oder front—the latter
one of the most dangerous and exposed sectors.
The assumption was that Himmler would fail
there. He was to be first discredited, then
liquidated.

Himmler ended as a suicide, but not before
Hitler himself had been liquidated.


Shortly after the curtain had gone down on the
drama of the European war, I had a long
conversation with Schellenberg, who, as I have already
related, had come to Stockholm to arrange the
surrender of the German troops in Norway, and
who still remained in the Swedish capital. My
earlier dealings with Schellenberg had made it
necessary for me to have a final conference with
him. By reason of his opposition to the official
policy he had felt constrained to support my plans
in connection with the Red Cross. And it can be
stated that the manner in which he exerted his
influence at the end contributed in no small degree
to sparing Denmark and Norway the horrors of
destructive fighting. The decision that the
