I had made progress, and the situation looked
more hopeful from my point of view, but
Himmler was filled with gloom.

Himmler: “The German Government has
made fatal mistakes. It was a mistake not to be
more frank with England. As for me—well, of
course, I am regarded as the cruelest and most
sadistic man alive. But one thing I want to put on
record: I have never publicly vilified Germany’s
enemies.”

Bernadotte: “If you haven’t, Hitler has done
so all the more thoroughly. What was it he said?—
‘We shall wipe out every one of the English
cities.’ Is it, then, so surprising that the Allies
systematically bomb German towns?” Himmler
retorted that bombing was not started by the
Germans, and I reminded him of Warsaw in 1939
and Rotterdam in 1940. To this he said nothing;
and shortly afterwards he rose with the remark
that he had to discuss some routine matters with
Schellenberg. The audience was over.

Schellenberg accompanied me to Berlin,
talking the whole way in a confidential but rather
forced manner. What he related gave me a good
