of the Swedish Red Cross should suffer a setback.
My own experience had told me how very
unstable the situation was. Anything might happen,
and if something did, I wanted at least to be on
the spot.

And something did. In Berlin I was informed
that our people had not yet been allowed to begin
their work at Neuengamme. The German
authorities had raised difficulties, insisting that the
camp must be put in order before we could do
anything. According to the agreement, part of
Neuengamme was to be set aside for the
Scandinavian prisoners, and there was evidently no
desire to admit any foreigners until things had been
tidied up. Norwegian prisoners informed me
later that sanitary measures had been begun in
the camps a few weeks before, and that
conditions had improved considerably in the section
where the Scandinavians were to be placed. I
have, therefore, good reason to believe that the
hideous conditions at a later date revealed in, for
example, Buchenwald had existed in
Neuengamme too.
