The gloves were off. The fight had begun.


Half a century earlier the political world had
its eyes sharply focused on Schloss Friedrichsruh,
for it was to Friedrichsruh that the aged
Chancellor Otto von Bismarck had withdrawn after
his forced resignation in March 1890. It was from
here that he carried on his campaign against the
“new course” of German policy. It was here that
he wrote his highly critical articles about William
II and also his famous Gedanken und
Erinnerungen
. It was at Friedrichsruh that he received the
homage of the German people; here vast
numbers came as on a pilgrimage to manifest their
love for the aged statesman. And it was here that
he ended his days.

Now Friedrichsruh had become the
headquarters of a Swedish errand of mercy in the final
stages of the second World War. The old Castle
was shortly to find itself in the thick of the
fighting.
