intolerable from the point of view of the Third
Reich. If the program were sanctioned, neutral
representatives would obtain far too intimate a
view of conditions in the various camps, the long
and carefully preserved secret of their horrors
would be revealed, and the last remnants of Nazi
prestige would vanish. When this telephone
message came from the Swedish Legation, I replied
emphatically that I would not permit my
arrangements with Himmler to be interfered with by any
subordinate, and that I declined to discuss these
matters with anyone but Himmler personally.
The decisions taken could only be revoked by a
new agreement between Himmler and myself. I
said this, not doubting that our telephone line was
tapped and that the conversation would soon
reach Kaltenbrunner’s ears.

This episode gives an interesting side light on
the conditions prevailing during the last grim act
of the Nazi drama. The agony of death had
begun; dissolution had already set in; but intrigue
and counter-intrigue among the hierarchy were
as vindictive as ever. I know that Schellenberg
played an active and useful part in these days
