It was against this background that I began my
work in Germany: Hitler raging because of the
concession made, and Himmler not being able,
not daring, or not caring to oppose his master.
Schellenberg told me that at this period a certain
strain in the relations between the Führer and the
head of the Gestapo was noticeable. Himmler
declared his unswerving loyalty. But his freedom of
action was restricted.

“Is it your intention that the Norwegians and
Danes now in German concentration camps
whom you want sent to Sweden shall be given
police training there? Do you really consider a
country neutral when it does such things?”
Himmler shot this at me sharply, and when I
replied that I had nothing to do with these matters,
he immediately went on: “If I were to agree to
your proposals, the Swedish papers would
announce with big headlines that the war criminal
Himmler, in terror of punishment for his crimes,
is trying to buy his freedom.”

We had now reached the crucial point in our
talk, which lasted two hours and a half, and at
which Schellenberg was present. As was my
