Commander-in-Chief of the home army—the man
whose system of terrorization had stained politics
with crime in a manner hitherto unknown, and
who, by means of this very system, had up to this
moment held the tottering Third Reich upright.

William Shirer, in his Berlin Diary, describes
Himmler as a quiet little man who looks like a
harmless country schoolmaster—an excellent
superficial description of the Gestapo chief. When
I suddenly saw him before me in the green
Waffenschutzstaffel uniform, without any decorations
and wearing horn-rimmed spectacles, he looked a
typical unimportant official, and one would
certainly have passed him in the street without
noticing him. He had small, well-shaped and delicate
hands, and they were carefully manicured,
although this was forbidden in the SS. He was, to
my great surprise, extremely affable. He gave
evidence of a sense of humor, tending rather to the
macabre. Frequently he introduced a joke when
conversation was threatening to become
awkward or heavy. Certainly there was nothing
diabolical in his appearance. Nor did I observe any
