The Religion of the Inhabitants of Finland, like those of Lapland, is the Lutheran, But, alas! much is still wanting to make them real Christians. It would be a charitable action, nay I could go farther and say, that it is the duty of all the neighbouring Sovereigns to endeavour to inculcate the knowledge of true Christianity into this, yet unenlightened, People. They are not separated by unnavigable Seas, or inaccessible mountains. Their understandings, though unimproved, are not mean: their tempers, though rough and uncivilized, are yet gentle enough to receive Instruction. It would be a glorious act to undertake to civilize this ferocious people. I would not here be understood to mean that this is a general description of all ranks of men in this district of the Globe. I would confine these observations to the mountain Inhabitants, for the Inhabitants of their large Towns and other places of trade are not far behind the rest of the world in the arts of Life, or in the cultivation of Religion.
