Whether this was the reafon, or whether he fufpe@ed
fome impofition inthe management of the public revenues,
and particulaly in that of diftilléd Spirits, or whether he
had an eye only to his dwn private emolument, certain
itis, that his Majefty iffued an edi@ for difcontinuing »
- every diftillery of fpirituous liquors throughout the King-
dom. A fecond ordinance was immediately proclaimed
for ereting diftilleries of his own in every province and
laying a fevere penalty on thofe who dared to manuface
ture their own brandy. This Expeétation of increafing
wealth foon vanifhed and proved but an additional cala-
mity. Partly from his own injudicious management,
and partly from the impofitions of thofe he employed,
he foon found the ill Effeéts of his Schemes. Doubtlels,
