they fubje€t to the extremes of decoration but obferve a

of Emulation which we may obferve in fome countries
that we know, neither do they endeavor to exceed or
excel one another in diftin@ions of this trifling nature.
Mutfic is efteemed. one of the snolt po ite accomplifh-
ments among the Ladies; it-is indeed almoft a general
Science in this country, Many of their mufic Matters
are held in high repute, and that vocation 1s thought fo
honorable as to introduce them to all affemblies, with peo-
ple of the firfl diftin@tion. The Church mufic of the
Swedes, infpires the mind with religious awe. It operates,
however, often too powerfully on weak minds: and pro-
duces more the fhew than the true fpirit of Religion.
It is not my intention, however, to deny the power
of Mufic in difpofing the mind to ferioufnels, and adding
to the very {pirit of devotion, Milton, who, we all know,
