After picking up a tributary from the right, the river
turned to the south-east, traversing a distinctly marked
valley, which we hoped would eventually lead us to a region
with better grass. In this glen we came across a highly
remarkable formation, namely, two thick shelves of ice,
one clinging to each bank. We elected to travel on that

and to get over it were obliged to go down into the bottom
