"Heathen Mine" as well as the name "Riddarhyttan" itself (the "Knight Works")
indicate that the metal
industry in these districts is
perhaps of an origin so ancient
as even to rival that of the
copper-mine at Falun, although
this is considered to be the
oldest in Sweden. Old
documents, too, point to the
extreme age of the Riddarhyttan
mines.

The oldest document now
preserved with regard to this
mine is a letter of the year
1420, from King Erik of Pomer-
