safety and advantages of a personal nature. He chose,
therefore, rather to abdicate, surrendering himself into the
hands of his enemies. All loyal Russians will hold his
memory sacred—aye, the time will come when pilgrimages
will be made to the spot where his blood was shed.

The defence against hypercriticism might be carried to
far greater lengths and strengthened by many more
exemplifications. But the intention was not to exhaust the subject,
the aim being merely to pierce the gloom of hopeless criticism
for arriving at a saner and more faithful appreciation of
Russia and her future.
