Schellenberg’s Story

Foreign Affairs. This meant that he must treat
your visit as being of an official nature and report
it to Hitler. He therefore instructed
Kaltenbrunner to make use of a favorable opportunity
to mention the matter to Hitler and try to
ascertain what his feelings were. Instead
Kaltenbrunner asked Gruppenführer Fegelein to attend
to the matter, and the following day Fegelein was
in a position to report that the Führer was
definitely opposed to the project. “Buffoonery of that
sort won’t help us in this war,” was Hitler’s
comment.

And then you arrived in Berlin. I at once
telephoned to Himmler, begged him earnestly not to
ignore this gesture on the part of Sweden, and
said that he absolutely must receive you. After a
great many objections Himmler agreed that
Kaltenbrunner should speak to Ribbentrop and I to
Geheimrat Wagner and try to arrange for
Ribbentrop to see you without Hitler’s knowledge,
and without letting Ribbentrop know that the
Führer had forbidden your reception. If
Ribbentrop agreed, then I and Kaltenbrunner could also
