It was with an easier mind that I returned to
Stockholm. The foundations had been laid. It
should be possible to save many lives, and Sweden
could be of real help to her Scandinavian
neighbors. On my return I immediately reported to
the Swedish Government. It approved my
arrangements with Himmler and von Ribbentrop
and also agreed to my suggestion that a Red Cross
detachment be dispatched at government expense,
the equipment and material to be supplied by the
military authorities. I also reported to the
commander-in-chief, General Helge Jung, who gave
the plan his approval. The work of organizing
the expedition was immediately begun by the
Defense Staff and the Army General Staff. As the
