subject I emphasized that I quite understood the
German point of view that it was the duty of all
German citizens to take their share of the burden
imposed by the existing situation, but I pointed out
how desirable it was that these women who had
lost their homes, or whose husbands and grown-up
sons were either killed or missing, should be
removed to Sweden, where they could be looked
after by their relatives. The Swedish Legation had
prepared lists of these people, and I now handed
Himmler several containing only the most
distressing cases. His face clouded over when he
discovered that the list included a number of
children.

“I don’t feel inclined to send German children
to Sweden,” he said. “There they will be brought
up to hate their country, and they will be spat at
by their playmates because their fathers were
German.” When I tried to calm him down by
pointing out that it should be a comforting
thought to German fathers to know that their
children were in safety in Sweden, he retorted:
“Their fathers would doubtless much rather see
