Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, born 1810, died 1897. Graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1836, then lived in Norwich.

Brewer is perhaps best known for his Dictionary of Phrase and Fable.

He also published A Guide to the Scientific Knowledge of Things Familiar (1838; 4th ed. 1849; 11th ed. 1857; 22nd ed. 1866) which became very popular and was translated to many other languages. The French translation was done by Abate Moigno and continued after his death by Henri de Parville.

A Swedish translation-adaption was made by P. Westerstrand, Naturlärans grunddrag populärt framställda i frågor och svar, 1858, based on the French edition by Moigno.

A new Swedish translation-adaption, based on the edition by Parville, was made by Thore Kahlmeter, Hvarför? och Huru? Nyckel till naturvetenskaperna, 1890.
