Hollander: JJómsv. saga. 195
be dark, except by comparisom with 291, p. 10, Ftb. I, p.
104: at þar verþe nçckverr afspringr af þessom úfride a
lima firþe etc. I cannot see, Hiowever, that nçckurr afspringr
is not sufficiently explicit in iitself.
2) Through the calumnies of Fjplnir, king Harald has
become jealous of the powerr of earl Áki of Zealand and
sends out a fleet to surpris6e and kill him on his return
from an expedition to Gautlanid. H. 7, 20:
var þat hógt þui at þeir kumnu ei at varaz þetta. Far komo
konnngs menn at þeim med her þenna a ovart ok letu bëra a þa
vápn. ok felldu a þa tiôlld, enn þþeir voro ecki uid bunir, ok drepa
þa alla. — According to Krijn tfche passage felldu á þá tiçlld has
become unintelligible because off the omission of the statement
(seen in the other versions): er nu fra svá sagt þá er Aki kemr
viþ Si^land í Danmçrko at þeir Akki hafa tiçld á landi etc. However,
a reference to the customs of tbhe times *) will show to all satis-
faction that it was a common esnough practice to erect tents on
the (undecked) ships themselves, when in harbor, for passing the
night. That is, the passage in 1H. is good as it stands. By im-
plication, the other versions have padded here.
3) ”In the remaining redactions Pálnatoki spurs Sveinn
on to demand ships from king; Harald and then to harry in
Denmark with these ships. .According to H. Sveinn does
so on his own initiative. It ies stated afterwards that Sveinn
was rather stupid 2
); but sinœe Pálnatoki is conducting all
of Sveins plans against Harrald it is certain that H. here
omits that Pálnatoki eggs Sweinn on to sail to Denmark
with his ships.” — It is nott at all necessary to assume
that according to H., Sveinn ^undertakes these harryings on
his own initiative. Rather, tlhe tenor of the narrative im-
plies with all certainty that Sweinn is altogether under Pál-
natoki’s influence — górir allit eptir þvi sem fostri hans
lagâi rad a med honum (H. Ill, 24).
‘) Cf. N. Nicolaysen, Langskibeet fra Gokstad p. 83. Egilss. ch. 27,
Hsk. (Unger) p. 562. Hålfss. ch. X, «etc.: also, for that matter, below (H
12, 9) : fetta kveld kemr Palnatoki þoar uid lannd .. . hann legr audrum
megin undir nesit ok tialdar þar. eptir þat geingr Palnatoki a lannd.
