Phillpotts: Sturt. 20

Þá mælti Þriði: fyrst var þó sá heimr í sudrhálfu, er Muspell
heitir; hann es ljóss ok heitr, svát hann er logandi ok brennandi;
er hann ok úfœrr þeim, er þar eru útlendir ok eigi eigu þar ódul.
Sá er Snrtr nefndr, er þar sitr a landsenda til landvarnar, hann
hefir loganda sverd, ok i enda veraldar raun hann fara ok herja
ok sigra pil godin, ok brenna allan heim med eldi.

Sn. B. I. 80. II. 7-8 Gangleri: Hvat gœtir þess stadar
(Gimle) þ& er Snrta logi brennir himin ok j$rd?

I. 188« I þessum gný klofnar himininn, ok rida þadan
Mu-spells synir: Surtr ri dr fyrst, ok fyrir honam ok eptir bædi eldr

I. 192. Þvi næst slýngr Surtr eldi yfir jprdina, ok brennir
allan heim.

The references to Surt’s flaming sword, to the crash in
which the welkin is rent, to the appearance of Surt and his
battle with Frey, are to be put down to the authority of
Ygluspy’. Ancl Gangleri’s question is clearly taken from Yþm.,
though the breaking of Bifr9st comes from Fm. But it is
necessary to look far afield for the curious reference to Surt
as the warder of the land. Moreover in Ysp. Muspell, if it
is not a scribal error, is in the east, while Snorri locates it
in the south. But most probably ’Muspells’ in Ysp. 51 is, as
Professor Bugge points out, an error for Heljar, which is
borne out by Snorri’s Loka fylgja allir Heljar sinnar. Then
Professor Bugge would read norfran for austan; for ’north
lies Hel’s way\ These emendations have been adopted by
Symons in his edition of the Elder Edda. But this does
not give us any clue to the origin of Muspell in Snorri.
The word only occurs in one other passage in the Elder Edda,
in Lokasenna, where it can hardly be an error, for the
alli-teration depends on it. In v. 42 Loki teils Frey that he
will miss his sword

es Muspelz syner
ríþa Myrcviþ yfer.

The passage is evidently founded on Ysp.’s account of the
battle between Frey and Surt in v. 53.
