Craigie: Skaldic Metre.

isungs fir a disi l)
siklingr firum mikla.

Now we have seen above (§ 19) that when a compound
beginning with J-J- is shifted one place inward in the line
it becomes a. j. ^ or ^ -£ w, and it is possible that the same
rule might apply in this case. This would make such lines
equivalent to & ^ | -£- ^ | + ^ and J- ^ | J- ^ | s ^ respectively,
and the evidence of the hendings, so far as it goes, is not
against this; on the one hand we have pott bWungis allnr,
on the other % lyptingu lenge2). But it is quite possible
that derivatives of this kind did not in every respect follow
the rule of compounds, and that such lines are to be taken
as z, | J- ± w | -*- w and ±\J-±^\s^.

§ 22. In a comparatively small number of lines (40
in Skjaldekvad) the first word is one of four syllables,
having the form either of Metrically

the first syllable must always be -£, but the scansion of the
third syllable leaves some room for differences of opinion,
and here we must take into account the different classes of
endings which such words exhibit. The commonest type is
a participial form in -cmdi, as
First line’s-

salbrigctandi Svegctis
herstef’nandi hrofnum
furskerfiandi fjarSar
+ other three.

Second lines
eldskerSandar verSi
fwrpverranda verra
au&gildanda vilda’k

+ other five.

The normal stressing of present participles was apparently
J- ^, as may be seen from such lines as 20 heptandi vas’h
heiptir, 10 heptendr laga eptir, but this value is impossible

’) Whether this makes sense or not, the metre shows that D:r J6n
£orkelsson’s conjecture fura (adopted in Skjaldekvad) is not likely to be
correct.

’) It would probably be unsafe to attach any significance to KgiTs
lines, fara a braut meet vikingum (c. 40), and gangr v*8 har&r a vikingum
(c. 48), which seem to end with JLjf.^.
