862 Craigie: Skaldic Metre.

the final syllable is not -£■ but either 6 or 61). It is, of

course, no argument against this view that such lines as

par’s uxi stod, vicf jGfri gem etc. involve a distinctly long

syllable at the end of the line. It will be remembered that

such verbs are regularly inserted in unstressed positions ui

dr6ttkvaett, as for example:

Fyrr raud Fenris varra.
Hdr leikr eldr of drum.
brdS 6x borginmofia.
ut baud jofrahneitir.

Prof. Sievers originally supposed (Beitrage X. 527—8)
that such lines were to be taken as .£ a. | x x | ~ X, but has
since come to the conclusion (Altg. Metrik 102—3) that the
verb is in reality altogether without stress, and this is
certainly the correct view. In perfect accordance with this is
the fact that in the fourth place of a line, whether in
forn-yrdislag or dr6ttkv»tt, a verb with long vowel is
admissible, while a noun of like form is not. Hence we may
have such lines as:

bld&dxar raud’k bUSi
tnctimhridar avail meMtum
Eyvindr of hlj6p skreyja
landvSrdr es brast Hortta

but such forms would be quite inadmissible if the words

were nouns; compare:

helgengnir for dvelja
bordmarar sk® fcera
do^gbands fyr ver handan
allvaldr a see Jcaldan.

These facts tell strongly against Prof. Sievers9
assumption (Altg. Metr. 105) that the lines hundmdrgum 16t
grun-dar, munnrjoSr es kom sunnan are examples of his E-type.

’) I do not propose to deal at present with the question why skut and
ktU should be metrical] y equivalent. In many cases this could be explained
by the final vowel being originally short, but it is doubtful how far this
would apply to diphthongs, as in *tey, «<r.
