vedlige og afgive Lokale for Rustkammer og for
Garnisonskirken. Fæstningen beleiredes forgjæves 1531—
1532 af Kong Cristian den anden, der, efter at være
afsat fra Thronen af den danske Adel, var kommen
fra Nederlandene forat erobre Norge tilbage, og i 1567
og 1716 af Svenskerne, sidste Gang under Kong Carl
den tolvtes personlige Anførsel. — Fra Fæstningens
øverste Del er en ualmindelig smuk og vid Udsigt over
Fjorden og Christianiadalen.
6. »et kongelige Slot ligger paa Byens
Vestside og er opført paa en Høide, 110 Fod over Havfladen,
efter Tegninger af senere Slntsintendant Linstow. Til
dets Bebyggelse bevilgedes i 1822 af clet forsamlede
Storthing 150,000 Spd., hvoraf 48,000 Spd. medgik til
Indkjøb af forskjellige Eiendomme til Byggegrund og
Parkanlæg. Tomten, hvorpaa Slottet er opført, var
oprindelig en til Bebyggelse uskikket Fjeldryg, men ved
betydelige Mineringsarbeider og Opfyldning blev den
omdannet til en ned mod Byen skraanende jævn Flade.
Den 1 Oktober 1825 blev Grundstenen lagt under Kong
Carl Johans Nærværelse i Christiania, men allerede i
1827 blev Arbeidet indstillet, paa Grund af, at
Storthinget fandt, at det var anlagt efter en altfor
storartet Plan. Efter at Linstow havde omarbeidet og
simplificeret Tegningen, fortsattes Arbeidet i 1834, og
i 1836 blev Bygningen bragt under Tag. Efterhaanden
foretoges flere mere og mindre væsentlige Forandringer,
og først i 1848 var Slottet færdigt, hvorefter det toges
i Brug det følgende Aar. — Slottet, som er opført af
Mursten paa en Sokkel af Syenitporphyr og som er
omgiven af en stor og smuk Park, bestaar af en Hoved-
The site of the edifice was formerly a sharp mountain
ridge, which extensive blasting transformed into a gentle
declivity. On the lst October 1825 the foundation stone
was laid, under the auspices of King Carl Johan
(Bernadotte) ; but two years later the works were suspended,
the Storthing finding the plan of construction arranged
on too vast and costly a scale. Linstow then simplified
his designs, and the works being resumed with vigour
in 1834, the edifice was roofed in by 1836. Minor
alterations of various kinds being subsequently
undertaken, the building was not completed till 1848.
This edifice, — which is a brick structure resting
on a socle of syenite-porphyry, and environed with
beautiful grounds, — comprises a central pile of three
stories, exclusive of mezzanine and basement, and two
extensive two-story wings, forming a spacious
courtyard at the back of the building. The grand entrance
— facing the city — is through an ornemented
gateway. Above the porch there is a handsome stone
balcony with lofty stucco pillars. The Queen’s apartments
are in the first story, one of the finest being Her
Majesty’s boudoir, which in magnificently decorated in
white and gold; here, too, are apartments for certain
members of the royal household. The middle story —
18 feet in height — contains the King’s apartments,
and the banqueting and presentation chambers.
Exclusive of the banqueting-room, — which extends through
the second and third stories, and is surrounded with
a gallery, resting on 48 Corinthian pillars, the spacious
dining-salon, tastefully decorated in the Pompeian style,
is deserving of notice ; also the council chamber, the
