noted Coronation Sermon.

Shortly after the coronation, the king convoked a
council of the bishops and other prominent members of
the clergy to sit at Orebro in February, 1529, for the
purpose of establishing a liturgy for the Church in
accordance with the Holy Scriptures. One reason for
the convocation was that one Melchior Hoffman, a
German cooper, had come to Stockholm in 1526,
provided with recommendations from Luther and
Bugen-hagen, and begun to preach apocalyptic and
iconoclastic sermons. Compelled to leave Sweden the following
year, Hoffman went to Holstein and thence to
Wittenberg. Then Luther learnt to know the man better,
whereupon he recalled his recommendation and warned
the people of Bremen against him. Subsequently
Hoffman accepted Zwingli’s doctrine of the Eucharist, next
going over to the Anabaptists, and dying in prison at
Strassburg in 1543. It was the appearance of this
Melchior Hoffman in Stockholm which gave rise to the
story of alleged Anabaptist excesses in that city in 1524,
supposed to have been led by Melchior Rink and
Knip-perdolling. This tradition has been passed down from
the Chronicle of Peder Svart, bishop of Vasteras, to
the works of Bishop C. A. Cornelius, although it was
subjected to doubt in Archbishop H. Reuterdahl’s
History of the Reformation. Neither Olavus Petri,
