withdraw his abdication and resume the government.
Although the bishops did not take direct part in the
framing of the resolutions of the Diet, yet these prelates
were obliged to submit, and they finally declared
themselves satisfied, "however rich or poor His Grace
designed to make them."
The resolutions and acts passed and ratified at the
Riksdag of Vasteras are found recorded, partly in "The
Vasteras Recess," partly in the "Ordinantia." In the
Recess, the states-general pledge loyalty to the king
and favor increased revenues for the crown and
betterment of the economic condition of the nobility through
the restoration to them of certain landed estates which
had come into the possession of the Church. The
representatives pray also, "that the Word of God be
preached in its purity throughout the kingdom."
The Ordinantia, the contents of which are
formulated in Twenty Articles, establishes the principle that the
king is the temporal head of the Church, and that the
clergy are the equals of the laymen before the law.
After the passage of the acts, but prior to the
ratification of the Recess, the disputation between the adherents
of the old and new order took place at the request of
the states-general. The leading parts were taken by
the two antagonists, Peder Galle and Olavus Petri.
The principal subjects discussed were, the false
indulgences of the pope, the secular power of the bishops, and
