"The Reason Why the Mass Should Be in Swedish"

published by Olavus Petri in 1531, in defense of his
simultaneous work, "The Swedish Mass" (Then
Swen-ska Messan epter som hon nw holies i Stockolm medh
orsaker hzvar fore hon sa hdllen tvardher).
Modeling upon Luther’s "The German Mass" of
1526, he recast the Catholic Mass in an evangelical and
critical spirit, while the Confession of Sins (I, poor,
sinful man," etc.) is entirely his oWn work. The revised
editions of 1535 and 1537 were issued by the author
himself; that of 1541 by Georg Norman.
"A Little Book in which is Explained How Man
Gains Eternal Salvation" was published by Olavus
Petri in 1535. Its complete agreement with Luther’s
theology and the Pauline doctrines has been pointed out
in the foregoing sketch of Olavus Petri at Wittenberg.
We make the following typical extracts from this
work:
"In His infinite mercy God sent Jesus Christ into
this world in order that He should be a Mediator
between God, who was wroth, and man, who had offend-
