able to get along with the plain gospel text alone in
preaching to their congregations." This was followed
in 1530 with a similar work by himself, entitled, "A
Little Postil" (Een lijten Postilla offuer all Euangelia
som om sondaghanar lasen warda offuer hela aret, etc.).
In his foreword the author says: "By this Postil, modest
as it is, we hope to have done away with a common
subterfuge, so that our church pastors will no longer be
able to say that they cannot understand the text and
therefore do not know what to preach. Herein the
meaning is so plainly expounded that even if they simply
read out of the book, it will not fail to bear fruit. For
it must indeed be a very ignorant clerical, who is not
able to do that much, and such an one ought by no
means to hold a church pastorate."
As a specimen of Olavus Petri’s preaching and his
presentation of the doctrine of the sacrament of the
Lord’s Supper, we make these excerpts from the sermon
for Palm Sunday found in his Postil:
"From the words of consecration at the institution
of the Holy Communion, dear friends, it is manifest
that Jesus ordained it as a sacrament, namely, that He
gave us His body to eat in the form of bread, and His
blood to drink in the form of wine. But His purpose in
so doing we will now inquire into. We must mark,
first, that after all mankind had come under the devil
through sin committed by our first parents Adam and
