Lutheran heresy in Sweden. Finding that he was able
to do nothing, he was about to return to Rome to be
invested with greater authority, when he was elected
archbishop by the Uppsala chapter. Now it became a
matter of prime concern for him to obtain the sanction
of the pope for himself and four newly elected bishops.
When he was on the point of starting for the sacred
city, however, a mandatory brief from Pope Hadrian
arrived, ordering the reinstatement of Archbishop
Trolle, or dire ecclesiastical punishment would follow.
To this the king replied, on October 4, 1523, that if
His Holiness insisted on forcing upon the Church in
Sweden an archbishop who, in co-operation with King
Christian, had perpetrated the atrocious murder of two
of its bishops, he would “freely exercise his royal
authority in so governing the churches and regulating religious
matters in his realm as seemed most pleasing in the
sight of God and acceptable to all Christian princes;”
for he would not tolerate that his people “be made serfs
under the heavy yoke of foreign oppressors.”

Pope Clement VII. consecrated Petrus Magni as
bishop of Västerås, upon his promise to pay the
customary fees; but when onerous exactions were demanded
from the other newly chosen bishops as the price of
papal sanction, Gustav I. would not permit payment of
the fees. Thereby the king, too, broke with the pope.
