dessa trakters förhistoriska befolkning. Kanske bebodde ett nomadfolk, mäktigare
och mera krigiskt, dessa lyckligare lottade trakter.
I norra Arizona, på de vilda platåerna kring Grand Canon samt i bottnen af
denna storartade erosionsdal, finnas ruiner" af samma slag som nyss beskrifvits. Likaså
längs hela Colorado Chiquito,2 en biflod till Colorado. Öfver det landområde, som
ligger mellan Colorado Chiquito och San Jtian, har jag företagit en ridfärd,
hvarunder jag iakttagit, att äfven denna trakt är rik på fornlämningar. Inom detta
område ligga äfven Moki-indianernas byar, och i närheten af dessa finnas talrika ruiner, >
visande att Mokis fordom haft en större utbredning. Några af dessa ruiner äro först
i historisk tid öfvergifna.
Västra gränsen för puebloruinernas utbredning går i norra hälften af Arizona,
ungefär genom Aztec Pass, 113° W. Long. från Greenwich; från denna plats åt
väster ända till Coloradofloden och Stilla oceanen,♦ finnas ej mer några spår af ruiner.
I New Mexico, ej långt från gränsen till Arizona, bo Zuni-indianerna. Deras
byar ligga vid Zuni River, som är en biflod till Colorado Chiquito. I trakten finnas
många öfvergifna pueblos, af hvilka flera varit bebodda i historisk tid. 5 Andra
däremot hafva troligen legat i ruiner, långt innan spaniorerna i midten af 1500-talet nådde

contains many house and village sites. At intervals along the very brink of the great chasm we come
upon heaps of stones and rased walls of houses about which are countless fragments of this (the
coiled) ware.

Colorado Chiquito) were occupied by the ruins of stone houses of considerable size, and in some instances
of three stories in height. They are evidently the remains of a large town, as they occurred at intervals
for an extent of eight or nine miles, and the ground was thickly strewed with fragments of pottery.v
