19. A Witty Answer.
A navvy entered a railway
carriage and såt down opposite
a very affected and over-dressed
young gentleman, who was
nursing a small dog of a very
peculiar breed. The navvy
watched the dog for some
time, then leant across, and
said: »Excuse me, governor,
but what sort of a dog is that?»
The »nut» replied: »My dear
fellow, I don’t know you; I
have not been introduced to
you, and I don’t wish to speak
to you!» The navvy leant back
in his seat again, looking very
subdued, but after a time he
could not restrain his curiosity.
»It isn’t much to ask, governor,»
he said; »I’m a dog fancier
myself. You might tell me
the breed of the animal. »Well,
if you must know,» said the
exquisite youth, »it’s a cross
between a navvy and a monkey!»
»Oh!» replied-the navvy quick
